Robb is President of Design Workshop, and is known for the high value he places on individuals and teams. He optimizes teamwork, keeping a focus on the distinct needs and opportunities of each project. Speakers are going to talk about the legend of logo design, the art of communication, guidelines for accessible design, and how to conduct inclusive research that gives you more qualitative data to act upon.

Her passion for working with the communities and people who will ultimately enjoy the spaces is what ties everything together for her—listening to their hopes, concerns, and dreams, and weaving them into the story of the project. Sara serves on the board of ASLA Colorado as Vice President of Programming and Communication. She graduated from the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry with a Bachelor’s in Landscape Architecture and a minor in Environmental Writing and Rhetoric. Early in her career, Aimee fell in love with the dynamics of people and work, understanding that people create competitive advantage within organizations, and she knew that she wanted to pursue a career in human resources.

She is a licensed landscape architect and a certified planner and facilitator, currently serving her own community as vice-chair of the New Castle Planning Commission. His two decades in planning and design have given him a deep appreciation of the science and art of the built environment, and a dedication to environmental stewardship and resiliency. He has a keen eye for detail and is skilled in every phase of project development.

Marla, Controller, joined the firm in 1999 after working as an accountant and internal auditor for the previous nine years. Marla is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day accounting functions for the firm along with preparing financial statements and management reports. She has an accounting degree from the University of Colorado Boulder and an MBA from the University of Colorado at Denver. Any piece of design – industrial, commercial, or creative – that can enhance the user experience will get a foot in the door while others will be banished from society. As the design thinking evolves to become more human-centered, events like Experience Design will be a great way to learn the anatomy of experience, advanced analytics, and ethnographic research to fully – pillars of experience design evolution. We also have quite a bit of material for use—leftover from research projects, coursework, and events in the space. We generally recommend bringing your own materials, but please come have a look at what we have stocked as well. In her role as CEO, Becky is responsible for leading the firm’s eight studios and heading strategic services. Thanks in part to support from School of Engineering and Brown Annual Fund donors, the makerspace has grown into an emblem of the Brown ethos—a place where students have the freedom to explore, collaborate, imagine, and create. Jeff, known around the studio as Zimmy, is fortunate that his professional life and personal interests often align. He enjoys spending hours walking the project site, allowing the attributes of the land to drive planning and design decisions. He is known for his distinct design approach—based on a “choreographed” sequence of lit visual events—which has been chronicled in Marc Schiler’s Simplified Design of Building Lighting and Sage Russell’s The Architecture of Light. Based in our Aspen Studio, Max is a Project Manager who specializes in multi and single-family residential design. His passion for the field is grounded in his family’s background in the landscape industry, stemming from generations of landscape contractors and nurserymen.

Online events include talk sessions with industry leaders, portfolio collaborations with BIPOC students, conversations surrounding the topics of inclusivity, sustainability, how to bend linear thinking into the circular design, and so much more. Eam of Monitors seeks to provide people with help in safely using our tools to realize their design projects. Moving forward, the BDW aims to increase engagement with the greater Providence community. It currently works to do so through passing out brochures and giving tours to non-Brown students. “We want to increase connections both in terms of reach and more intimate collaborations with other maker spaces,” said Baek. As Manfredi begins her tenure, she sees the workshop’s potential to improve the use of resources, processes and materials to minimize the impact on climate change and build partnerships with environmentally and ethically sound suppliers.

Xiaojian earned her Master of Landscape Architecture Degree from University of Southern California and she is currently a member of ASLA. As a planner and urban designer in our Houston studio, Tarana brings over ten years of national and international experience creating equitable and resilient built environments. She believes in collaborating with the client and stakeholders to deliver a thoughtful and multi-disciplinary solution to problem-solving while being able to communicate concepts through data visualization and storytelling. Her dedication has resulted in numerous planning awards for projects such as the Mont Belvieu Livable Centers Study.

To become a member, simply come into the Brown Design Workshop, identify a Monitor (wearing an apron), and ask them to assist you in making an ID badge. Users who are not enrolled/staff/facuty at Brown University must sign a waiver upon entering the space for the first time (this includes RISD students), and minors must have a parent or guardian sign an additional waiver. Where we can do things differently, where we have potential to be leaders, is in the creativity of our students and the way they think about problems in the world. On top of that, we have this resource of RISD, one of the best design schools in the country. You are free to hang out in the BDW at any hour, but locked tools cannot be used unless a monitor is present. This workshop covers how to thread a sewing machine, address basic malfunctions, wind and load a bobbin, as well as perform basic sewing on a machine.
As Technical Principal in the Aspen studio, Paul provides mentorship and professional development firmwide in the areas of quality control, project management and technical execution. He is a highly accomplished leader in all project phases from design to construction observation and is committed to the DW Legacy Design approach. She is adept at analyzing and distilling site information and design and planning opportunities to establish the framework for project success. At the same time, she is a great listener with an affinity for human connection and collaboration. Alison holds a BA in Landscape Architecture from the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana and a Master of Urban Design from the University of Colorado, Denver.

She is also a co-leader of the DW DEI Metrics team where she focuses on better understanding the complex and data-driven evaluation process behind creating equitable spaces and built work, a topic near and dear to her. With a passion for highly complex, precisely detailed site design projects, she enjoys working on all phases of residential projects. She gets inspiration from the natural landscape and oriental gardens to design calm, relaxing spaces for her client.
Her expertise spans across multiple disciplines and includes training in studio art, landscape architecture and spatial analysis. As a project manager working on parks and community spaces across the country, she leverages her technical and creative design to develop and test concepts in all phases of design and planning. She is passionate about promoting wellness, security, and identities across all communities and believes in the power of the collaborative process to shape outdoor spaces that are as meaningful and engaging as they are responsible and enduring. Chris, a planner and urban designer in our Denver studio, is driven by the desire to provide clients and community members a meaningful voice in the planning and design of public spaces. Chris works on projects of all scales, from community planning to the detailed design of public spaces, and is particularly fond of projects that tackle social and physical challenges.
She is intrigued by projects and firmwide efforts that influence people’s everyday experiences and affect their lives as a whole. Her administrative roles in landscape architecture, architecture and regional planning disciplines for the past twenty years have honed her skills of managing, marketing and project assistance. Richard joined Design Workshop's Aspen studio in 1976, based in our Aspen studio. He graduated with honors from Utah State University and earned his Master of Landscape Architecture degree from the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University, where he was awarded the Jacob Weidenman Traveling Fellowship. Richard is a full member of the Urban Land Institute and has held council memberships in its Retail Development Council and the Recreation Development Council. He has taught Resort Design through Harvard University’s School of Design Professional Development Series.
